Bill Rawson was a sports writer at a daily newspaper in northwestern New Jersey before embarking on his teaching career. The program he advised at Pascack Valley High School was named the top online publication in NJ four times, captured an NSPA Online Pacemaker award, and produced the state's journalist of the year in 2021. He was president of the Garden State Scholastic Press Association (GSSPA) — yes, believe it or not, New Jersey is officially the Garden State! — for three years, during which time the state passed New Voices legislation to help clarify and protect student journalists' First Amendment rights. Rawson was a 2018 recipient of the GSSPA's Golden Quill Award, given to an individual who, according to the organization's website, “has made substantial contributions not just to his or her own students, but to the growth and quality of scholastic journalism throughout the state (of New Jersey).” In his free time Rawson enjoys hiking, weird rock music, and sports (especially the NY Giants, Mets, and Rangers).
